The evening of October 9, 2016, was a captivating and memorable one at the Ravine Pentecostal Centre in Uyo, Nigeria, as choirs from various states gathered to participate in the much-anticipated 2016 Inter-State Choral Singing Exercise. This annual event, celebrated for its display of exceptional musical talent and spiritual devotion, brought together an audience that included special guests such as His Lordship Bishop Alex Igwe, Bishop of the Port-Harcourt Region, and esteemed members from the Leader’s office.
The event kicked off with an inspiring opening speech by the International Chairman of the CNCF, setting the tone for what was to be a night filled with divine harmony and competitive spirit. The Akwa-Ibom State Central Choir set the stage with a beautiful welcome song that left the audience in awe, serving as a perfect prelude to the evening’s main event.
Ten state choirs participated in the choral singing exercise, each bringing their unique flair and dedication to the competition. The choirs were evaluated by an esteemed International Panel of Judges Committee, consisting of five distinguished judges known for their expertise and fair judgment in choral music.
The competition was fierce, with each choir delivering outstanding performances, but it was the Rivers State Central Choir that captured the hearts of the judges and the audience alike. Their rendition of “Letter to a Brother,” composed by Brother David Mendie and conducted by Brother Egiom Dighoboh Sotoh, stood out for its exceptional execution and emotional depth. The performance earned them a standing ovation and the coveted first place in the 2016 Choral Festival Inter-State Singing Exercise.
Following closely were the Akwa-Ibom and Cross River State Central Choirs, which secured the second and third positions respectively. Both choirs showcased remarkable talent and were highly commended for their efforts.
For the Rivers State Central Choir, this victory was particularly sweet. It marked their return to glory since their last win in 2010 under the leadership of Brother Innocent Udoaka. The jubilant choristers, trophy in hand, celebrated their triumph with songs of joy, parading through the streets surrounding the Ravine Pentecostal Centre. Their enthusiasm and joy were palpable, and their celebration extended the spirit of the festival beyond the walls of the venue.
The night concluded with a bountiful blessing from the Holy Father, who bestowed His grace upon all attendees. Following the blessings, a feast was served, allowing everyone to come together in fellowship and gratitude for the successful event.
